Early Morning: We'll pick you up from your hotel and head to the SPICE PLANTATION located near Kizimbani.
Zanzibar is called the "Spice Island," and it's impossible not to fall in love with its aromas. During the plantation tour with a guide, you'll learn about the spices and tropical fruits grown here. You’ll have the chance to touch, smell, and taste them. It will be a true feast for the senses.
On the plantation, you will find spices like cloves, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, tamarind, curry leaves, vanilla, lemongrass, nutmeg, pepper, coffee, lipstick tree, and fruits such as jackfruit, bananas, limes, mangoes, papayas, starfruit, pineapples, and guava.
The plantation visit also includes a coconut tree climbing demonstration and a refreshing drink of fresh coconut juice.
At the end of the tour, you'll receive a gift of palm leaf and flower jewelry, along with a crown that will make you feel like King Julien from Madagascar. A great souvenir to dry when you return home. At the exit of the plantation, you can also purchase quality spices and natural vanilla extracts from local vendors.
The spice plantation tour concludes with a lunch where you’ll try delicious Zanzibar dishes made with local spices.
PRISON ISLAND: After lunch, you’ll head to Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island.
You’ll take a 30-minute boat ride from Stone Town to the island.
The island’s main attraction is the giant tortoises, brought here from Seychelles in the early 20th century. These tortoises live peaceful lives and can live up to 200 years or more. They’ll be happy if you feed them cabbage and take photos with them.
Prison Island was initially meant to be a prison for criminals, but this never happened. It later served as a quarantine station for those suffering from yellow fever. It’s a unique yet charming place that you must visit.
STONE TOWN: The final stop is Stone Town, also known as the "Old City."
Stone Town is the historic heart of Zanzibar. It's a lively place, full of charm thanks to the mix of cultures, religions, and fascinating architecture. The guide will share the history of this historic town and show you several interesting places, including stone houses, massive carved doors (symbols of wealth), old mosques, Jaws Corner Square, the Old Fort, the House of Wonders, the Sultan’s Palace, the house of Freddie Mercury (the famous Queen singer), and Darajani Market.
As you explore the city, you’ll wander through narrow streets filled with shops selling beautiful ethnic jewelry, colorful dresses, scarves, handicrafts, and other souvenirs. You'll admire the carved and richly decorated wooden doors that Zanzibar is known for.
Be sure to pay attention to the worn walls of old buildings, charming windows, and the tangled mess of cables hanging between buildings, creating a unique artistic disorder.
Walking through the labyrinth of streets, you’ll witness how history and tradition blend with modernity. The final stop will be the Darajani Market, which will captivate you with its incredible energy. The scents, sounds, and countless colorful stalls selling everything from aromatic Zanzibar spices to fruits, vegetables, and clothing will immerse you in the shopping experience.
However, the fish and meat sections may be a challenge due to the distinctive smell. Watch out for your nose! :)
Stone Town is truly a gem of Zanzibar with an African vibe. Its unique atmosphere makes you want to return, so as the tour ends, don’t say goodbye...
