Auschwitz-Birkenau

Auschwitz-Birkenau German Nazi concentration and extermination camp

( 1940 -1945 ) World Heritage since 1979.

Auschwitz-Birkenau is not only a place of remembrance, but also one of the most important symbols in the history of 20th-century civilization. Today, it functions as a museum and memorial site, visited by tourists from all over the world as part of organized trips from various locations in Poland.

The camp became a warning against the consequences of ideologies of hatred, antisemitism, and contempt for human life. Its name is now a symbol of the Holocaust and the tragic events of World War II.

History of Auschwitz-Birkenau

Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest German Nazi concentration camp and the only one that also served as a center for systematic extermination in gas chambers.

During its operation, approximately 400,000 prisoners of various nationalities were registered, mainly Jews and Poles. The total number of victims is estimated at around 1.1 million people.

Auschwitz UNESCO – World Heritage Site

In 1979, the former camp site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a place of exceptional historical and educational significance.

Since 1947, the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum has been operating here, responsible for preserving the remaining structures, conducting research, and providing historical education.
