DAY 3 – SLOVAKIA: STARA ĽUBOVŇA CASTLE + OPEN-AIR MUSEUM (SKANSEN)

✅ Breakfast at the hotel

Morning departure to Stará Ľubovňa in Slovakia, a town located right on the border with Poland.

Visit to Stará Ľubovňa Castle and the Open-Air Museum (Skansen)

Stará Ľubovňa Castle

On the border of Polish and Slovak history rises the majestic Ľubovňa Castle – a place that has witnessed major political events and remarkable stories over the centuries. It was built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, and in 1412 Sigismund of Luxembourg and Władysław Jagiełło met here, concluding a peace agreement and incorporating the castle into the Spiš Pledge for over 300 years.

During the Swedish Deluge, Polish crown jewels were hidden here, and among its residents and prisoners was Maurycy Beniowski. Its last owner was Jan Kanty Zamoyski, who managed the castle until 1945.

Open-Air Museum (Skansen)

The skansen located at the foot of Ľubovňa Castle, opened in 1985, is a unique area showcasing the everyday life of the region’s former inhabitants. It recreates a traditional village of Upper Spiš and Šariš, where various cultures coexisted for centuries – including Rusyns, Highlanders, Germans, Jews, and Roma.

The most important building is the wooden Greek Catholic church of St. Michael the Archangel from 1833. The museum features a total of 32 residential and farm buildings, complemented by an exhibition of traditional livestock such as sheep, goats, cows, and horses, giving the place an authentic, living atmosphere of the past.

A visit to Ľubovňa Castle and the skansen is a journey through the history and everyday life of the region’s former inhabitants. After exploring the castle walls, halls, and its remarkable past, you descend to the skansen, which naturally completes the story by showing life outside the fortress.

DAY 4 – BELIANSKA CAVE + RETURN TO KRAKOW

✅ Breakfast at the hotel

Departure to Belianska Cave – the only accessible cave in the High Tatras

Belianska Cave (Belianska jaskyňa) is one of the most frequently visited caves in Slovakia and the only show cave in the High Tatras. It impresses with extraordinary rock formations and rich calcite dripstone decorations.

Despite over 125 years of exploration, its exact origin is still not fully explained.

The cave is located on the northern slope of Kobylí Vrch, in the eastern part of the Belianske Tatras, within the Tatra National Park. It formed in limestone, and its interior was shaped by water – both through rock dissolution and flowing water erosion. The oldest parts of the cave were formed before the Ice Age, while later processes only partially modified its shape. Today, it is nearly 4 km long with a vertical range of 168 m.

Visitors can admire impressive halls and corridors, including spectacular chambers with formations resembling waterfalls and stalagmites of unusual shapes. Characteristic features also include smooth, oval passages carved by flowing water, as well as deep shafts and vertical chimneys.

The walk to the cave leads along a forest path from the village of Tatranská Kotlina, near Tatranská Lomnica. The trail is about 1,000 meters long and takes around 25 minutes, with educational boards along the way.

Inside the cave, conditions remain constant – the temperature is 5–6°C and humidity reaches up to 97%. This creates an ideal environment for many organisms. Several bat species live here, including the greater mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis), and small aquatic organisms such as Bathynella natans can be found in underground waters.

A visit to the cave is a unique experience that allows you to discover the fascinating hidden world beneath the surface of the Tatras.
