1. 📍 Wawel Hill – The Wawel Dragon and the Dragon’s Den
We begin our adventure on Wawel Hill – one of the most extraordinary places in Kraków, where history intertwines with legends.
It is here that we learn the story of the Wawel Dragon, which according to ancient legends was said to live in a cave beneath the hill and terrorize the entire city. Near the famous dragon statue, you will hear different versions of this tale – like a true story full of mysteries and riddles.
Of course, we also enter the Dragon’s Den – it will be quite an adventure!
For children – The Legend of the Wawel Dragon 🐉
A long time ago, when the lands of Poland were ruled by King Krak, a dragon appeared in Kraków. It was a huge, fearsome creature with green scales, a long tail, and a mouth full of sharp teeth, breathing fire 🔥.
The dragon lived in a cave under Wawel Hill and began terrorizing the city’s inhabitants. If it did not receive food, it would kidnap people or animals. Fear spread among the people of Kraków.
Every week, the dragon demanded a tribute – the fattest cows. The people worried that they would soon run out of cattle.
King Krak promised a reward to anyone who could defeat the monster. Many brave knights tried, but none returned.
Just when all hope seemed lost, a poor and humble shoemaker appeared at the king’s court.
“My lord, I think I can defeat the dragon,” he said shyly.
All the knights laughed at him, but the king agreed to give him a chance.
The shoemaker came up with a clever plan. He killed a ram and stuffed it with sulfur. Then he placed it near the dragon’s cave and hid.
The dragon came out, saw the ram, and immediately ate it. Soon after, it felt an intense thirst. It began drinking water from the Vistula River 🌊 – drinking and drinking without end.
Eventually, its belly could not withstand it, and the dragon exploded.
Kraków was saved, and the shoemaker became the city’s hero. To this day, at the foot of Wawel Hill, you can see the Dragon’s Den and a fire-breathing dragon statue.
2. 🔔 Wawel Cathedral and the Sigismund Bell
The next stop is Wawel Hill and the impressive Wawel Cathedral, which served as the coronation cathedral of Polish kings – one of the most important places in Polish history. It was here that rulers were crowned and the most significant figures in Polish history were laid to rest.
Inside the cathedral is the famous Sigismund Bell – one of Kraków’s most important symbols. According to tradition, its ringing accompanied the most important events in the country’s history, and touching its clapper is said to bring good luck.
This place allows children (and adults alike) to imagine what life was like in ancient times, when Wawel was the heart of royal Poland.
3. 🎓 University District
Here, children can feel the unique atmosphere of a place that has been connected with learning and students for centuries. The university district is a quieter part of Kraków, where it is easy to imagine young people from many countries arriving over hundreds of years to gain knowledge and develop their passions.

4. 🏰 Main Market Square
The Main Market Square is the heart of Kraków and one of the largest medieval squares in Europe. It has been a vibrant meeting place for centuries. In the past, merchants and travelers from all over the world gathered here, and today it still offers a unique atmosphere full of history and legends.
Both children and adults will be amazed by this place and its extraordinary character.
It is a lively space where people have met for hundreds of years, and every building has its own story.
In the center of the square stands the Cloth Hall – once a trading hub where merchants sold goods from all over the world. One can imagine it being noisy, colorful, and filled with the scent of exotic spices, with strange and fascinating items from distant lands displayed on the stalls.
Today, the Cloth Hall is one of the most famous landmarks in Kraków and a reminder of the times when the market square was like a huge, bustling marketplace.
You will also notice Kraków’s pigeons, one of the symbols of this place. They walk among visitors and add even more life and charm to the square.
According to one legend, these pigeons are connected to enchanted knights who were meant to protect the city. That is why they still gather here, as if guarding the heart of Kraków.
5. ⛪ St. Mary’s Basilica and the Veit Stoss Altarpiece
St. Mary’s Basilica is one of the most important churches in Kraków. It impresses visitors with its extraordinary architecture and rich history full of legends and mysteries.
Inside is the monumental Veit Stoss altarpiece – one of the greatest masterpieces of Gothic art in Europe, which leaves a huge impression on visitors.
The basilica is also associated with the famous legend of the St. Mary’s trumpet call (Hejnał Mariacki), played every hour from the tower, whose abrupt interruption commemorates a medieval trumpeter. This place holds many stories that spark the imagination and make every walk through Kraków a journey through time.

The Kraków obwarzanek has a history of over 600 years – the first references date back to 1394. Its name comes from the process of “obwarzanie,” meaning dipping the dough in boiling water before baking. This gives it its characteristic taste, elasticity, and appearance.
Since 2010, the Kraków obwarzanek has held a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) awarded by the European Commission. This means it can only be produced in Kraków and selected surrounding counties, according to a traditional recipe and production method.
